What took you so long? You started your project on July 2nd of 2008, but then again you are putting in 40 hours a week on your job, running a family of 3 kids, though you are getting a lot of support from your wife, I am amazed you can pull it through at all. Good job!

Eric - I think I would opt for finishing the cabinets in the garage as you originally planned. If you mark the floor where your cabinets will be you can tile without the cabinets in place. The advantage will be you can still run the tile under the front edge of the cabinets. I think this looks better and you will have fewer cuts. You may have some shimming to do under the back edges of the cabinets to make up for the lack of tile but that's not a big deal.

Also, I'm assuming you are doing backer board on top of your 1/2" ply. Set the backer board in thinset and screw it down.

Your project is coming along great. Keep up the good work.

Eric - I had an addition project once and was considering spray foam. The contractor came out to give me a price and educated me that batts would be better in my situation. I said OK thanks, they are on sale at the home center and I can DIY, thanks for your time. He insisted on giving me a price. Well, his price came in $200 less, installed, than I could have bought the materials for!

But yes - insulation batts are very bulky. If you have a lot to do it can be many trips to the home center.

Holy macro! Just looking through the pictures reminded me that nothing is too simple. Building the cabinets is only one small (and probably the most enjoyable) part of the entire project. I guess the bulk of construction work is only because you want to have a larger window, then one thing triggers another, and another. Any way, it is looking good already. Keep up the good work.

Wow! You have come a long way, pilgrim. Now I can understand your concern about the finishing on this mater piece. After all, you don't want to make any mistake at the last step by applying the wrong kind of finish, like Norm Abram did in couple of his projects. Good luck!

Eric: I can see you've taken on a big project and are making great progress. Doing a kitchen involves such volume that most woodworkers won't try. So my hats off. Great write up here and inspiring to others who might want to tackle their own kitchen makeover. Keith (www.woodtreks.com)

Hey Eric. Glad you found the review useful. You really just can't beat the Earlex for the price. There have been several jobs where I kept the Fuji ($700) unit at home because I really just wanted the simplicity of the Earlex. I think it will do a find job on your cabinets. Good luck with it.
